Anger is an emotion which is accompanied by physiological and biological changes. Your heart rate and blood pressure go up when you are angry. As well, your energy hormones, adrenaline and noradrenaline increase.

There are three main approaches to anger:

  • expressing,
  • suppressing and
  • calming.

Expressing your feelings in a controlled and assertive manner is the healthiest way. You need to know your needs, and how to meet them without hurting others. It's all about having respect for yourself and others.

When anger is suppressed, it can turn inward on you. It may cause hypertension, high blood pressure or depression. If anger is not expressed, it can create other problems like passive or aggressive behavior which makes it difficult to build successful relationships with others.

Therefore, if you can stay calm, your heart rate, blood pressure and outward behavior will be controlled. If these techniques are not successful, someone is going to get hurt.

Anger can be controlled by simple techniques and relaxation tools such as:

  • deep breathing,
  • repeating soothing words like "take it easy",
  • yoga,
  • meditation, and
  • don' forget to count to 10.

Changing the way you think is another good way of controlling anger. When we are angry, our thinking is exaggerated and extra dramatic. If we make an effort to replace it with more rational thoughts, this may help. You have to remind yourself that getting angry is not going to solve anything, it only manages to make you feel worse. We try to find solutions to our problem, but since sometimes that is not possible, we get angry instead of facing the problem. When we are angry we come to the wrong conclusions. If we slow down and think carefully about what we want to say before we say it, that goes a long way to solving our problems and stop anger.
